چکیده
This paper proposes genetic algorithms (GAs) approach to feature discretization and the determination of connection weights for artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the stock price index. Previous research proposed many hybrid models of ANN and GA for the method of training the network, feature subset selection, and topology optimization. In most of these studies, however, GA is only used to improve the learning algorithm itself. In this study, GA is employed not only to improve the learning algorithm, but also to reduce the complexity in feature space. GA optimizes simultaneously the connection weights between layers and the thresholds for feature discretization. The genetically evolved weights mitigate the well-known limitations of the gradient descent algorithm. In addition, globally searched feature discretization reduces the dimensionality of the feature space and eliminates irrelevant factors. Experimental results show that GA approach to the feature discretization model outperforms the other two conventional models. q 2000 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Expert systems in finance - a cross-section of the field
This paper surveys a number of well-known expert systems in the domain of finance. The idea is to illustrate the span of typical expert systems in finance and to provide an insight into the approaches and techniques they employ. The systems considered in the paper are all working systems, and come from different fields of finance. Specifically, the systems considered are FINEVA (from the field ...

متن کاملImproving the performance of neural networks in classification using fuzzy linear regression
In this paper, we apply the fuzzy linear regression (FLR) with fuzzy intervals analysis into a neural network classi®cation model. The FLR works as a data handler and separates the data sample into two groups. By training two independent neural works with these two groups, we can better describe the distribution space of the corresponding data sample with two different functions, rather than us...
متن کاملIntellectual capital: from intangible assets to fitness landscapes
Intellectual Capital (IC) has been proposed by Edvinsson and Malone (1997) as a technique for quantifying a company's intangible assets. A careful analysis can result in hundreds of variables, and extracting knowledge from these measurements can be difficult. We introduce a knowledge management technique called IC mapping that attempts to synthesize this data into a fitness landscape. Using the...
